Boehner Receives 2010 Henry J. Hyde Defender of Life Award

Americans United for Life (AUL) honored Congressman Boehner last night with the 2010 Henry J. Hyde Defender of Life Award. Blogger The Other McCain has video of Boehner’s remarks and photos from the event. Here’s some recent coverage:

>> GOP Leader Boehner Receives ‘Defender of Life’ Award: “Boehner was ‘recognized both for his extraordinary leadership in the fight to prevent taxpayer-funded abortion and for his work to protect women’s health in his own state of Ohio,’ according to the  AUL press release.” (American Spectator, 5/6/10)

>> Boehner Increasingly Holds Pro-Life Mantle: “[H]e has quietly bolstered the anti-abortion cause — from his friendship with the late Rep. Henry Hyde (R-IL) to his support in OH for litigation challenging Planned Parenthood. And his up-front role during the health care debate showed advocates on both sides of the issue that he was willing to get out front in opposing government support for abortion at a time when many long-time Dem foes of abortion — chiefly, Rep. Bart Stupak (D-MI) — shifted the other way.” (National Journal, 4/23/10)

Boehner told reporters that “Henry Hyde was a hero of mine … I’ve always believed that life begins at conception. I’ve always thought abortion was wrong, and speaking out against it was never difficult. It was a moral position I felt very strongly about.” Here’s a brief excerpt from Boehner’s remarks:
