Congressman Boehner told 55KRC this morning that while unemployment remains sky-high in Ohio, Washington is broke and borrowing $.43 out of every dollar it spends. We need to start cutting spending – today – to create new jobs and get control of the debt.
Boehner says there’s no need to wait. On Fox News he explained that Republican leaders have pledged to force an up-or-down vote on any spending cuts President Obama submits to Congress. Watch him here:
BOEHNER: “The President already has the authority to send to the Congress what we call rescissions. Those are issues that are already in spending bills that he signed that he can send back to Congress, and force an up-or-down vote. Eric Cantor and I sent a letter to the President earlier this year outlining some $350 billion worth of rescissions that we promised him that if he sent those rescissions to Congress, that we would work to get all Republicans to support cutting the budget and doing it now. … We don’t have to wait for some new law or provision to be passed. The President can do it now. The Congress can do it now. We don’t need some new authority to push the Congress to do what it should already be doing.”
Boehner and Republicans aren’t just talking about cutting spending or sitting around waiting for someone else to act — they’ve rolled out proposals to actually do so. Hot Air Blog covers the latest plan by House Republicans that would save more than $1.3 trillion in taxpayer dollars. This comes on the heels of previous proposals to:
>> Shut down TARP and using the remaining funds for deficit reduction;
>> Freeze all non-defense, non-veterans’ health care spending for five years, and then allow it grow modestly after that;
>> Stop the bailouts and reform Fannie Mae & Freddie Mac, the root cause of our financial crisis;
>> Ban on all pork-barrel earmarks – which Republicans have already unilaterally adopted;
>>Start cutting spending now by using the president’s rescissions authority; and more.
Despite the need to act now, the Los Angeles Times says Democrats are “simply refusing to pass a budget resolution” that cuts spending and will likely push for more spending in the months ahead. Boehner argued on 55KRC that – with record deficits and sky-high unemployment – every penny needs to be scrutinized to the fullest:
BOEHNER: “Because $.43 out of every dollar that the federal government spends this year we have to borrow from our kids and our grandkids. So I think the test is pretty simple. I’m going to go through every line item in these bills. And I’m going to ask the question: is this spending so important that we’re going to ask our kids and grandkids to pay for it? And if it doesn’t meet that test then why in the world are we doing it?”
Congressman Boehner is fighting for better solutions that will help small businesses create new jobs here in Ohio by curbing government spending, not raising taxes and creating more government bureaucracy. If you’d like to get involved in his fight, click here and become a Boehner Campaigner today!
