The Columbus Dispatch reports that Ohio lawmakers sent a letter today urging Governor Strickland to oppose the costly government takeover of health care crafted in secret by Washington Democrats. According to the Dispatch:
“Just today, Ohio House Minority Leader William Batchelder of Medina wrote Gov. Ted Strickland to warn him that raising Medicaid eligibility would ‘cause Medicaid costs and state taxes to certainly skyrocket,’ and urged the governor to oppose the congressional health reform bills.”
In fact, recent reports have shown that by expanding the taxpayer-funded Medicaid program, the bill by Washington Democrats would impose more than $922 million in unfunded mandates on Ohio.
The letter by Ohio leaders can be found online here along with a statement by Batchelder who explains that Ohio’s “budget is already facing a deficit, and Ohioans certainly do not need more regulations, spending and heavy-handed policies from Washington.”
The Dispatch also quotes Congressman Boehner arguing that the Democratic bill will “raise the cost of American health insurance” and “kill jobs with tax hikes and new mandates in it.” Nonpartisan analysis by the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) found that the most recent version of legislation will increase government spending by more than $1 trillion… and counting.
Republicans have better health care solutions that will lower costs and expand coverage without imposing new taxes and mandates. Read more about the Republican solutions here.
