On Fox News this morning, Congressman Boehner outlined a way forward for lawmakers serious about reforming our health care system to help lower costs and expand coverage without a massive, costly government takeover. Watch Boehner here:
BOEHNER: “Well, you don’t make this bill better. You just take this bill and not pass it, and pass about eight or nine separate small bills that says let’s get rid of junk lawsuits; let’s allow Americans to buy insurance across state lines; let’s let individuals and small employers group together so that they can buy health insurance at the same kind of prices that big companies and unions do today. These are common sense things that will bring down the cost of health care insurance and make it more affordable for more Americans.”
Boehner is championing four common-sense reforms that will lower health care costs and expand access to coverage by:
- Reining in junk lawsuits that drive up costs and force doctors to practice defensive medicine – increased tests and procedures – to avoid being sued.
- Letting families and small businesses buy health insurance across state lines.
- Allowing individuals, small businesses, and trade associations to pool together and purchase health coverage at lower prices.
- Giving states the tools to design their own innovative reforms that lower health care costs – similar to what was done with the successful, landmark welfare reforms in the 1990s.
These reforms are included in several pieces of Republican legislation that have been introduced in recent months and are ready for a vote. Read more about the Republican solutions here.
