Boehner Says a New GOP Majority Will Do Things Differently

Congressman Boehner addressed the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) and outlined how a new Republican Majority in the U.S. House of Representatives would govern differently – from both the current Democratic leaders and previous Republican Majorities.

One of the major themes of the speech was the commitment by Boehner to changing the way Congress does business – to making the institution more open, transparent, and accountable. >> Boehner promises openness as speaker: “Saying for the first time that Republicans could win control of the House in November, GOP leader John Boehner vowed today that he would run the House in a much more open style than Democrats and Republicans have in the past…. Boehner, a West Chester lawmaker, promised that he and his GOP colleagues would be ‘open, be transparent and be willing to listen.’ He said he would use new technology to increase Congress’ transparency.” (Columbus Dispatch, 2/19/10)

>> Boehner pledges a more open Congress: “House Republican Leader John Boehner will pledge Thursday that a Republican led Congress would not only function differently from the current Democratic majority with him as the Speaker, but it would be more open than previous Republican run Congresses.” (CNN, 2/18/10)

>> Boehner: Stimulus Was GOP’s Rebirth: “Boehner laid out several concepts he will push if the GOP gains the majority and he is elected Speaker. ‘I pledge to you right here and now: We’re going to run the House differently,’ he said. Boehner said his House will post all bills online for three days, as well as votes, and will ‘outlaw ‘phantom’ amendments.” In a poke at the Obama admin’s failure to put all negotiations on C-Span, Boehner said, ‘We will put cameras in the Rules Committee hearing room so Americans can see how decisions are made about what bills come to a vote.’” (National Journal, 2/18/10)

>> Boehner: GOP Would Lead More Transparent House:”Several times during his speech, Boehner recounted how the GOP stood together to oppose Democratic priorities such as health care reform and last year’s $787 billion stimulus bill, and vowed that in the next few months Republicans would unveil an agenda of their own. ‘In the months ahead we’re going to tell the nation exactly what we’d do differently if we’re entrusted with power,’ Boehner said. ‘But it won’t be a document handed down from on high by politicians, because something like that would land with a big thud.’” (Roll Call, 2/19/10)

>> Rep. Boehner at CPAC: ‘Both Parties Are Guilty, I Want To Change It’ and ‘Now We Have A Chance To Do It’: “Boehner emphasized what Republicans will do to demonstrate they are listening to the American people. He stated, ‘We’re going to listen to things like the ‘Contract FROM America.’ We’re going to listen to things like the Mount Vernon Statement.  We’re going to listen to the tea party movement.  It will come from those who are really in charge of this country:  the American people.  While the other side is busy mocking the tea partiers and calling them names, we’re going to listen to them, stand with them, and walk among them.’” (CNSNews.com, 2/19/10)

>> Boehner speaks of Republican ‘rebirth’: “Boehner also talked about a hometown Tea Party event he attended last September, saying that the Republican Party should not attempt to co-opt the Tea Parties. ‘What we will do is respect them, listen to them and walk amongst them,’ he said. ‘The other party will never ever do that.’” (MSNBC, 2/18/10)
